The themes for this year's assemblies and line up devotions have been unity, charity and humility. The theme for Term 3 was humility. Humility is an important character quality Jesus demonstrated throughout His life. This term we have been exploring three main points about humility of Jesus and how we can demonstrate humility in our own lives. We looked at the humility of Jesus in serving, in teaching and in forgiveness.

Humility of Jesus in Serving: Jesus consistently demonstrated humility by serving others selflessly. In Mark 10:45 (KJV) - "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.“ In other words, Jesus came into the world to serve others not to be served. Jesus treated everyone with love and respect, regardless of their social status or background. When Jesus met the Samaritan woman he spoke to her with love and respect that was against the social norms. Jewish men would not speak to Samaritan women at that time.

Applying this to our lives:

  • We spend time with someone who may not have the language or physical or intellectual or social skills like everyone else.
  • We see a need and lend a hand, or see a gap and fill it.
  • We take the initiative and ask, is there anything I can do?

Humility of Jesus in His Teachings: Jesus is willing to teach us and invites us to learn from him. In Matthew 11:29 (KJV) - "Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."

Applying this to our lives:

• Approach learning with humility, being open to new ideas and perspectives.

• Be willing to admit when we don't know something and seek knowledge humbly.

• Share your knowledge and wisdom with others humbly and compassionately.

Humility of Jesus in Forgiving: In the gospel, according to Luke 23:34 (KJV) - "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." We need to forgive people around you when they make mistakes or hurt our feelings.

Applying this to our lives:

• Apologise sincerely we make a mistake and seek forgiveness from others.

• Let go of anger and choose love and understanding instead.

In this devotion, we have learnt a few aspects of the humility of Jesus and how we can apply it in our daily lives. By serving others, valuing relationships, learning with humility, and sharing our knowledge, we can demonstrate the humility of Jesus. Let us strive to be humble, following the example set by our Lord, Jesus Christ.
